Chart of the week: Argentina’s deflated inflation figures

(Source: JP Morgan / FT)

Since the Argentinian government began to interfere with the national statistics agency seven years ago, official inflation figures have lagged far behind private economists’ estimates.

Prices are thought to have risen almost fivefold since mid-2006, while the official figures say 100%. Now Argentina has finally produced a more realistic inflation index. It is expected to record inflation of 22% for 2014, up from the official reading of 11% last year.
