Markets: FTSE 100 buoyed by mining stocks

The FTSE 100 made modest gains yesterday, climbing 0.4% to close at 6,376.

Miners were among the top performers. Glencore led the index up with a 3.4% rise, while Antofagasta gained 3.1 and BHP Billiton added 1.7%. Pearson continued its slide, falling a further 6.9%.

In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 rose 2.3% to 4,802, and the German Xetra Dax was 2.5% higher at 10,491.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.9% to 17,489, the S&P 500 added 1.7% to 2,052, and the Nasdaq Composite was 1.7% higher at 4,920.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 gained 2.1% to 18,825, and the broader Topix index added 2% to 1,547. And in China, the CSI 300 rose 1.3% to 3,571, and the Shanghai Composite gained 1.3% to 3,412.

Brent spot was trading at $48.53 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $45.62. Spot gold was trading at $1,174 an ounce, silver was at $15.98 and platinum was at $1,014.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.5400 and against the euro at 1.3850. The dollar was trading at 0.8993 against the euro and 120.36 against the Japanese yen.

And in the UK, William Hill reported a 39% slide in profits in the third quarter, while net revenue fell by 9%. The bookmaker warned full-year profits would be at the lower end of estimates of between £290.9m and £312.1m.
