Markets: miners drag FTSE 100 down

The FTSE 100 ended the week on a low note, slipping 0.2% to close at 6,353.

Miners were the main drag. BHP Billiton was the day’s worst performer, down 5.7%, Glencore lost 4.7% and Randgold was 3.6% lower.

In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 rose 0.1% to 4,984, and the German Xetra Dax was 0.9% higher at 10,988.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.3% to 17,910, the S&P 500 slipped one point to 2,099, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.4% higher at 5,147.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 gained 2% to 19,642, and the broader Topix index added 1.8% to 1,590. And in China, the CSI 300 rose 1.2% to 3,840, and the Shanghai Composite gained 1.6% to 3,646.

Brent spot was trading at $47.55 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $44.46. Spot gold was trading at $1,094 an ounce, silver was at $14.73 and platinum was at $936.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.5079 and against the euro at 1.4006. The dollar was trading at 0.9288 against the euro and 123.42 against the Japanese yen.

And in the UK, temporary-power supplier Aggreko reported a 7% fall in revenue for the third quarter, but said it was still on track to make full-year pre-tax profits of between £250m and £270m.
