Markets: FTSE 100 falls further

The FTSE 100 continued to fall yesterday, losing a further 0.4% to close at 6,277.

Burberry was the day’s biggest faller, down 5.3%, and hotels and catering company Whitbread lost 3.2%. Airlines were also in decline, with Easyjet down 3.2%, and International Consolidated slipping 3.1%.

In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 fell 1.4% to 4,820, and the German Xetra Dax lost 1.4% to 10,933.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1% to 17,812, the S&P 500 added 0.1% to 2,089, and the Nasdaq Composite was flat at 5,102.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 0.4% to 19,847, and the broader Topix index lost 0.7% to 1,594. And in China, the CSI 300 rose 0.7% to 3,778153, and the Shanghai Composite gained 0.9% to 3,647.

Brent spot was trading at $45.89 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $42.72. Spot gold was trading at $1,076 an ounce, silver was at $14.17 and platinum was at $840.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.5091 and against the euro at 1.4153. The dollar was trading at 0.9378 against the euro and 122.37 against the Japanese yen.

And today, tour operator Thomas Cook reported its first profit in five years. Pre-tax profit for the year to 30 September was £19m, compared with a £115m loss the year before.
