Markets: FTSE 100 ends the week on a low note

The FTSE 100 ended the week on a low note on Friday, slipping 0.3% to close at 6,343.

Housebuilders were among the worst performers, with Berkeley down 3.8%, while Taylor Wimpey and Barratt lost 2.4% each. Builder’s merchant Travis Perkins was the day’s biggest faller with a 4.6% fall. Sector peer Wolseley lost 2.3%.

In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 fell 0.4% to 4,495, and the German Xetra Dax lost 0.4% to 10,051.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.2% to 17,897, the S&P 500 slipped 0.1% to 2,080, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.2% lower at 4,938.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 slid 3.4% to 16,275, and the broader Topix index lost 3% to 1,320. And in China, the CSI 300 fell 1.3% to 3,228, and the Shanghai Composite fell 1.4% to 3,033.

Brent spot was trading at $41.02 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $38.32. Spot gold was trading at $1,236 an ounce, silver was at $16.15 and platinum was at $982.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.4186 and against the euro at 1.2550. The dollar was trading at 0.8848 against the euro and 108.22 against the Japanese yen.

And in the UK, the average asking price of a property in the UK has risen to a record high of £307,033, according to the latest figure from Rightmove.
