The FTSE 100 climbed further yesterday, adding 0.2% to close at 6,151.
Miners were the main drivers. Anglo American led the index up with a 5.4% rise, while Antofagasta added 3.6% and Fresnillo was 3.1% higher.
In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 slipped 0.2% to 4,312. German markets were closed for a public holiday.
In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 each rose 1% to 17,710 and 2,066 respectively, and the Nasdaq Composite was 1.2% higher at 4,775.
Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 gained 1.1% to 16,652 and the broader Topix index was 1.1% higher at 1,335. And in China, the CSI 300 fell 0.3% to 3,086 and the Shanghai Composite lost 0.3% to 2,843.
Brent spot was trading at $49.23 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $48.23. Spot gold was trading at $1,274 an ounce, silver was at $17.20 and platinum was at $1,051.
In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.4515 and against the euro at 1.2803. The dollar was trading at 0.8820 against the euro and 109.44 against the Japanese yen.
And today, Vodafone reported a pre-tax loss of £449m in the year to 31 March, down from a profit of £1.1bn the previous year. Revenues rose by 2.3% to £41bn.
