The FTSE 100 climbed further yesterday, adding 0.3% to close at 6,301.
Mining stocks were the top performers. Anglo American was the day’s highest climber, up 4.8%, while Fresnillo added 1.2% and Randgold Resources was 4.1% higher.
In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 slipped 0.6% to 4,448 and the German Xetra Dax lost 0.7% to 10,217.
In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.4% to 18,005, the S&P 500 gained 0.3% to 2,119, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.3% higher at 4,974.
Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 and the broader Topix index each fell 1% to 16,668 and 1,337 respectively. Chinese markets were closed for a public holiday.
Brent spot was trading at $52.52 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $51.38 Spot gold was trading at $1,260 an ounce, silver was at $17.02 and platinum was at $1,000.
In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.4461 and against the euro at 1.2697. The dollar was trading at 0.8779 against the euro and 106.35 against the Japanese yen.
And today, FlyBe reported a full-year profit as passenger numbers increased. The Exeter-based airline made a pre-tax profit of £2.7m compared with a loss of £35.6m the previous year. Passenger numbers rose by 5.9%, driving an 8.2% increase in revenue.
