The FTSE continued to rise yesterday, adding 3% to close at 6,204.
Financial stocks were once again the main drivers. Hargreaves Lansdown topped the index with an 8.6% rise, while Lloyds Banking Group, RBS and Barclays added between 7.6% and 6.7%.
In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 rose 3.5% to 4,340 and the German Xetra Dax added 3.4% to 9,962.
In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.75 to 17,804, the S&P 500 gained 0.6% to 2,083, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.8% higher at 4,837.
Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 1.3% to 16,169 and the broader Topix index gained 1.2% to 1,293. And in China, the CSI 300 slipped 0.2% to 3,106 and the Shanghai Composite was 0.4% lower at 2,878.
Brent spot was trading at $50.28 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $49.05. Spot gold was trading at $1,283 an ounce, silver was at $17.38 and platinum was at $985.
In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.4708 and against the euro at 1.2972. The dollar was trading at 0.8819 against the euro and 104.43 against the Japanese yen.
And in the UK, Whitbread reported a rise in sales and profits for the last quarter. Like for like sales in the 13 weeks to 2 June rose by 1.8% for the group as a whole, with those at Costa Coffee up by 2.6% and Premier Inn up by 1.8%.
