The FTSE 100 continued to climb yesterday, adding a further 0.8% to close at 6,374.
Gold miner Fresnillo was the day’s top performer, adding 4.1%. BHP Billiton rose 3.5% and Anglo American was 1.8% higher.
In Europe’s markets yesterday, the Paris CAC 40 gained 0.3% to 4,675, and the German Xetra Dax was 0.9% higher at 9,993.
In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.8% to 17,050, the S&P 500 added 0.9% to 2,013, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.4% to 4,810.
Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 1.6% to 18,438, and the broader Topix gained 2.3% to 1,515. In China, the CSI 300 rise 1.3% to 3,340, and the Shanghai Composite was 1.3% higher at 3,183.
Brent spot was trading at $53.66 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $50.22. Spot gold was trading at $1,151 an ounce, silver was at $15.93 and platinum was at $973.
In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.5375 and against the euro at 1.3573. The dollar was trading at 0.8828 against the euro and 120.14 against the Japanese yen.
And today, troubled commodities giant Glencore says it is to sack 1,540 people as it cuts back on zinc production. 1,000 jobs will go in Peru, the rest in Australia.
