Chart of the week: are we approaching peak Prosecco?

Britain’s thirst for Prosecco keeps growing, says Emily Gosden in The Daily Telegraph. In the year to March 2016, sales at major supermarkets jumped by 34% to £356m, according to market research group IRI. The reasonably priced Italian alternative to Champagne is now so popular that experts are beginning to warn of shortages; like Champagne, it is limited to a small region.

Retailers are looking for alternatives, which may explain why sales of cava and other non-Prosecco sparkling wines have done well too. Champagne only eked out a small increase. Still wine sales have fallen.
