Markets: FTSE 100 rises for the fourth day in a row

The FTSE 100 nudged higher yesterday, adding a further 0.1% to close at 6,834.

Sports Direct was the day’s highest climber with a 3.2% rise. Engineer Weir Group added 2.9%, and Marks & Spencer was 2.7% higher.

In Europe’s markets yesterday, the Paris CAC 40 rose 1.2% to 5,057, and the German Xetra Dax was 0.7% higher at 11,542.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1% to 18,144, the S&P 500 added 0.1% to 2,124, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.1% higher at 5,160.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 0.3% to 20,868, and the broader Topix index was 0.2% higher at 1,679. In China, the CSI 300 added 2% to 4,880, and the Shanghai Composite rose 2.5% to 4,690.

Brent spot was trading at $64.47 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $61.07. Spot gold was trading at $1,175 an ounce, silver was at $15.79, and platinum was at $1,065.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.5783 and against the euro at 1.4098. The dollar was trading at 0.8932 against the euro and 124.03 against the Japanese yen.

And in the UK, John Lewis has become Britain’s largest mutual organisation, knocking the Co-operative Group from the top spot. John Lewis recorded turnover of £10.9m, compared with the Co-op’s £10.8m.
