Chart of the week: Paying a high price for love

US weddings have become marginally less expensive in inflation-adjusted terms since 1990, but they still cost an average of $25,000 (excluding the honeymoon). Why so pricey?

The rich are more likely to marry than the poor, says The Economist, and couples are getting hitched later, so they have more disposable income when they get together.

The high price helps explain why around 20% of couples are taking out wedding insurance.
