The FTSE 100 fell back on Friday to close down 1.1% on the day – and 0.5% on the week – to 6,381.
Bookmaker Paddy Power Betfair was the day’s biggest loser, down 3.9%. Commercial property group Land Securities fell 3.3% and commodity giant Glencore lost 3.3%.
In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 fell 0.3% to 4,569, and the German Xetra Dax lost 0.6% to 10,373.
In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1% to 18,003, the S&P 500 was unchanged at 2,091, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.8% lower at 4,906.
Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 0.8% to 17,439 and the broader Topix index slipped 0.4% to 1,401. And in China, the CSI 300 and the Shanghai Composite each lost 0.4% to 3,162 and 2,946 respectively.
Brent spot was trading at $44.80 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $43.40. Spot gold was trading at $1,234 an ounce, silver was at $17.00 and platinum was at $1,006.
In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.4415 and against the euro at 1.2808. The dollar was trading at 0.8885 against the euro and 111.25 against the Japanese yen.
And in the UK, retailer BHS is set to enter administration today, putting up to 11,000 jobs under threat. The company has been a fixture of Britain’s high streets for 88 years.
