Markets: FTSE 100 little changed

The FTSE 100 saw little change yesterday, slipping just five points to close at 6,184.

Antofagasta was the day’s biggest faller, down 3.7%, while sector peer BHP Billiton lost 1.4%. At the other end of the table, Shire Pharmaceuticals added 4.1%.

In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 fell 0.8% to 4,427, and the German Xetra Dax slipped two points to 9,948.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1% to 17,623, the S&P 500 gained 0.1% to 2,051, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.3% higher at 4,808.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 1.9% to 17,048, and the broader Topix index added 1.9% to 1,369. And in China, the CSI 300 lost 0.3% to 3,225, and the Shanghai Composite was 0.6% lower at 2,999.

Brent spot was trading at $41.36 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $41.35. Spot gold was trading at $1,253 an ounce, silver was at $15.91 and platinum was at $979.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.4268 and against the euro at 1.2745. The dollar was trading at 0.8932 against the euro and 111.64 against the Japanese yen.

And in the UK, regional publisher Johnson Press reported a rise in profits for 2015. Pre-tax profits rose by 22% to £31.5m, but revenue was down by 6.8% to £242.3m. Johnson Press recently completed the £24m purchase of “I”, the sister title of the Independent.
