The FTSE 100 continued to climb yesterday, adding 0.4% to close at 6,201.
Miners were the biggest climbers of the day. Fresnillo topped the index with a 10% rise, while Anglo American, Glencore and Antofagasta added between 9.8% and 8.3%.
In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 fell 0.5% to 4,442, and the German Xetra Dax lost 0.9% to 9,892.
In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.9% to 17,481, the S&P 500 gained 0.7% to 2,040, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.2% higher at 4,774.
Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 1.3% to 16,724, and the broader Topix index fell 1% to 1,345. And in China, the CSI 300 added 1.5% to 3,171, and the Shanghai Composite was 1.7% higher at 2,955.
Brent spot was trading at $41.31 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $40.05. Spot gold was trading at $1,258 an ounce, silver was at $16.03 and platinum was at $979.
In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.4434 and against the euro at 1.2804. The dollar was trading at 0.8871 against the euro and 111.30 against the Japanese yen.
And in the UK, confidence among small companies is at its lowest since 2013, according to the Federation of Small Businesses. Their Small Business Index fell from 21.7 to 8.6 in the first quarter of 2016. The index hit a peak of 41 in the third quarter of 2014.
