Why it pays to shop after 4pm

Do your supermarket shop late in the day and you will usually find there are more bargains around, says Moneysavingexpert.com in The Guardian. Research for the website found that the ‘50% off’ stickers for goods close to their sell-by date appeared in Tesco at 4pm and other stores at 5pm. The ‘75% off’ stickers start going out at 7pm in the Co-op and Morrisons, 8pm in Tesco and Sainsbury’s and 9pm in Asda.

Check your bills. Eight million people have been overcharged on their bills in the last three months alone, and British consumers lose £10m a year to billing errors, says Money supermarket.com. Make sure you check all your bills, from mobile phone to tax, when you get them and question anything unusual.

Ban the brands. Save a third on your weekly supermarket shop by buying the next-cheapest product compared to your usual purchase, says Jasmine Birtles in The Guardian. “If you don’t notice the difference, or it’s hard to distinguish, then huge savings can be yours.”

Cross the Channel. “Regardless of the recently rising euro, a day trip across the Channel still enables you to pick up booze bargains galore,” says Birtles. Check Day-tripper.net for cheap ferry tickets, then visit Tesco-france.com, or Sainsburyscalais.co.uk to compare wine prices like-for-like to find the best savings.

Save with the AA. At the momentthe AA are offering new membersa £20 M&S voucher. If you choose their basic roadside policy, which costs £35, this means you can effectively get the cover for £15. The voucher also comes with more comprehensive policies – but then the “relative discount is diminished”, says Moneysavingexpert.com.

Be a part-time recruitment consultant. Head to Zubka.com, where you can sign up as a “connector”. You then browse the site for jobs you think would suit friends or family. If you successfully place someone in a job, you get a fee based on their new salary. For example, if you put someone in a job where they earn £50,000, you will receive £3,600. “You can potentially earn thousands from this, but it means ensuring you get the right people for the right jobs,” says the Daily Express.
