World markets report

The FTSE 100 climbed 1.98% on Monday, to 5,355. Miners were among the main risers as metal prices and gold gained sharply and the dollar weakened. The banking sector was also higher while confectioner Cadbury’s hit a new high on speculation over new bidders for the group.

Europe

The Paris CAC rose 84 points to 3,813; and the German Xetra Dax was 133 points higher at 5,801.

USA

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 1.29% to 10,451; the S&P 500 rose 1.36% to 1,106; and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.4% to 2,176.

Asia

Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 96 points to 9,401. In China, the Shanghai Composite fell 3.45% to 3,223; and the CSI 300 slid 3.2% to 3,548.

Commodities

Brent spot was trading at $76.75 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $77.23. Spot gold was trading at $1,168 an ounce; silver was at $18.58 and platinum was at $1,453.

Currencies

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.6516 and against the euro at 1.1052. The dollar was trading at 0.6694 against the euro and 88.67 against the Japanese yen.

UK news

This morning, Lloyds Banking Group has said it will raise £13.5bn in the UK’s biggest ever rights issue. The group will sell new shares to existing investors at 37p each, a discount of nearly 60% to Monday’s closing price.
