Markets: FTSE 100 builds on Monday’s gains

The FTSE 100 added to Monday’s gains yesterday in a volatile day’s trading. The index rallied late in the day to close up 0.2% at 7,062.

Broadcaster Sky was the day’s top performer, climbing 5% after reporting a 20% rise in profits. Chipmaker ARM was also in demand, adding 3.9%.

In European markets, the Paris CAC 40 rose 0.1% to 5,192, and the German Xetra Dax added 0.4% to 11,939.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5% to 17,949, the S&P 500 slipped 0.2% to 2,097, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.4% higher at 5,014.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 1.1% to 20,133, and the broader Topix index added 0.8% to 1,621. And in China, the Shanghai Composite gained 2.7% to 4,398, and the CSI 300 was 2.6% higher at 4,739.

Brent spot was trading at $61.60 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $55.95. Spot gold was trading at $1,201 an ounce, silver was at $15.98 and platinum was at $1,142.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.4962 and against the euro at 1.3909. The dollar was trading at 0.9296 against the euro and 119.56 against the Japanese yen.

And today, Tesco reported a loss of £6.4bn for the last year, its worst ever loss. The company made a trading profit of £1.4bn, but wrote down over £7bn, including £3.8bn to reflect losses on its property portfolio.
