Markets: FTSE 100 ends the week on a disappointing note

The FTSE 100 ended the week on a disappointing note on Friday, slipping 0.2% to close at 6,960.

Commodity and energy stocks were among the worst performers. Miners Glencore and Anglo American were the biggest fallers of the day, each losing 1.8%, while Royal Dutch Shell was 1.4% lower.

In Europe’s markets yesterday, the Paris CAC 40 and the German Xetra Dax each fell 0.7 to 4,993 and 11,477 respectively.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1% to 17,272, the S&P 500 added 1% to 2,122, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.1% lower at 5,048.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 0.8% to 19,890, and the broader Topix index added 1.2% to 1,626. And in China, the Shanghai Composite fell 0.6% to 4,293, and the CSI 300 lost 0.9% to 4,575.

Brent spot was trading at $67.75 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $60.72. Spot gold was trading at $1,229 an ounce, silver was at $17.63, and platinum was at $1,168.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.5678 and against the euro at 1.3756. The dollar was trading at 0.8774 against the euro and 119.67 against the Japanese yen.

And in the UK, property asking prices fell by 0.1% in May , according to Rightmove, with the average now standing at £285,891. Asking prices in London, however fell by 2.3% to £581,074.
