Markets: FTSE 100 sees further gains

The FTSE 100 saw further gains yesterday, driven again by rising commodity stocks. The index closed up 1.2% at 6,146.

Glencore was the day’s highest climber, up 4.4%. Anglo American added 3.9%, and Fresnillo was 2.7% higher.

In Europe’s markets yesterday, the Paris CAC 40 rose 1.1% to 4,598, and the German Xetra Dax was 1.6% higher at 10,271.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2.4% to 16,492, the S&P 500 gained 2.5% to 1,969, and the Nasdaq Composite was 2.7% higher at 4,811.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 leapt 7.7% to 18,770, and the broader Topix index added 6.4% to 1,507. And in China, the CSI 300 rose 2% to 3,399, and the Shanghai Composite added 2.3% to 3,243.

Brent spot was trading at $49.56 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $45.73. Spot gold was trading at $1,121 an ounce, silver was at $14.75 and platinum was at $1,001.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.5393 and against the euro at 1.3770. The dollar was trading at 0.8946 against the euro and 120.67 against the Japanese yen.

And in the UK, housebuilder Barratt reported record annual profits. Pre-tax profits for the year to 30 June rose by 45% to £565.5m. Completion volumes rose by 11%, and average selling prices rose by 9% to £262,500.
