Markets: FTSE 100 flat

The FTSE 100 ended the day virtually unchanged yesterday, adding just one point to close at 6,097.

Anglo American topped the index with a 6.6% rise. Intu Properties added 4.1%, and Burberry was 4% higher.

In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 rose 0.9% to 4,353, and the German Xetra Dax slipped 0.2% to 9,495.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.7% to 16,516, the S&P 500 lost 0.8% to 1,932, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.7% lower at 4,557.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 0.4% to 16,085, and the broader Topix index gained 0.2% to 1,300. And in China, the CSI 300 added 1.9% to 2,930, and the Shanghai Composite was 1.7% higher at 2,860.

Brent spot was trading at $36.83 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $34.14. Spot gold was trading at $1,240 an ounce, silver was at $14.86 and platinum was at $939.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.3958 and against the euro at 1.2824. The dollar was trading at 0.9188 against the euro and 113.26 against the Japanese yen.

And in the UK today, Barclays Bank reported a fall in profits for 2015. Statutory profits fell by 8% to £2.07bn, while underlying pre-tax profits fell 2% to £5.4bn.
