Markets: FTSE 100 rallies

The FTSE 100 rallied yesterday, slipping a further 0.9% to close at 6,125.

Prudential was the day’s highest climber, adding 2.9%. Glencore rose 2.5%, SSE gained 2.2% and Royal Dutch Shell was 2.1% higher.

In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 rose 0.5% to 4,425, and the German Xetra Dax added 0.3% to 9,723.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2% to 17,000, the S&P 500 added 0.5% to 1,989, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.6% higher at 4,674.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 gained 1.3% to 16,852, and the broader Topix index rose 1.5% to 1,352. And in China, the CSI 300 fell 1.9% to 3,013, and the Shanghai Composite was 2% lower at 2,804.

Brent spot was trading at $40.61 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $38.01. Spot gold was trading at $1,249 an ounce, silver was at $15.26 and platinum was at $980.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.4223 and against the euro at 1.2966. The dollar was trading at 0.9115 against the euro and 113.57 against the Japanese yen.

And today, Wm Morrison reported a return to profit in 2015. The supermarket made a pre-tax profit of £217m in the year to 31 January, compared with a loss of £792m in the previous 12 months. Total sales fell by 14.1% to £16.1bn.
