Markets: FTSE 100 climbs back into the black

The FTSE 100 climbed back into the black yesterday as most other markets fell. The index rose 0.4% to close at 6,522.

Royal Dutch Shell was the day’s top performer, adding 3%. GlaxoSmithKline rose 2.8% and British American Tobacco was 2.5% higher.

In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 fell 1.7% to 4,163 and the German Xetra Dax lost 1.8% to 9,532.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6% to 17,840, the S&P 500 lost 0.7% to 2,088, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.8% lower at 4,822.

Overnight in Japan, the Nikkei 225 slid 1.9% to 15,378 and the broader Topix index lost 1.8% to 1,234. And in China, the CSI 300 gained 0.3% to 3,216 and the Shanghai Composite added 0.4% to 3,017.

Brent spot was trading at $48.11 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $46.78. Spot gold was trading at $1,367 an ounce, silver was at $20.17 and platinum was at $1,068.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.2974 and against the euro at 1.1720. The dollar was trading at 0.9033 against the euro and 101.09 against the Japanese yen.

And in the UK, flooring retailer Topps Tiles said sales rose in the last quarter, despite uncertainty caused by the EU referendum. Sales in the three months to 2 July rose by 6.2%, compared with a rise of 4.9% in the previous quarter.
