Markets: FTSE100 rallies briefly

The FTSE 100 rallied yesterday, climbing 0.7% to close at 5,672.

Chipmaker ARM Holdings was the day’s biggest faller, down 4.3%. Precious metals miner Randgold lost 3.5%, and Fresnillo was 2.7% lower.

In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 gained 1.6% to 4,061, and the German Xetra Dax added 1.6% to 9,017.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6% to 15,914, the S&P 500 lost one point to 1,851, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.4% to 4,283.

Japanese and Chinese markets were closed for public holidays.

Brent spot was trading at $30.33 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $26.67. Spot gold was trading at $1,217 an ounce, silver was at $15.45, and platinum was at $938.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.4436 and against the euro at 1.2760. The dollar was trading at 0.8839 against the euro and 111.61 against the Japanese yen.

And in the UK, Thomas Cook reported a 1% rise in revenues in the last quarter to £1.4bn. the tour operator made a pre-tax loss of £116m, however, up from £115m in the same period last year.
